Writing a Research Paper

Writing a research paper entails a number of steps and elements: selecting a topic, researching the topic, and writing the paper.

Selecting and researching a topic means a number of things: understanding the basics of library research and being familiar with the print and electronic resources available at the library and on the Web. Knowing how to use keywords and the principles of Boolean searching helps to maximize your online search experience.

Once you've collected your research, your final step is writing the paper. Writing the paper properly requires understanding formatting styles, including how to cite sources and footnotes. The most commonly used formatting standard for research papers is MLA (Modern Language Association). Every library should have a copy of the MLA style guide for reference use in the library or to check out.
